A walking stick will make a big difference on your walk. I own 2 of them. This way when I go on a walk I have another to offer my hiking companion. Be sure to get a lightweight stick with solid construction.. Most stick should be able to extends from 24" to 54" length to cover your exact height. Also look for a stick with an Ergonomic handle with adjustable nylon strap eases strain on your arms and wrists; Carbide tip for dependable gripping power. Invest in a good walking stick and you'll be a lot happier at trail's end.
The Hiking Shoes

Ok this is where the rubber meets the trail. Don't be fooled the all of the sales hype. You need solid support and good shoes if your going to take on that mountain. Be sure to look for a boot that is waterproof breathable preferably with a Gore-Tex linings. Ensure the have supportive platforms with an air-cushioned midsoles. Protecting your feet and having a solid footing is one of your highest priorities. I was hiking with a gentalman who had workboot on during a hike and he miss stepped and hurt his foot. Took us a while to get back down the mountain. But when he met with the doctor he indicated he would not have had the injury if he had the proper footwear. Be sure to get yourself quality footwear and brin an extra pair of sox just in case.
